Installing Roller Shades In Six Easy Steps

The first thing you must figure out is the placement of your window shades. Will you be mounting them inside or the outside the window frame? When the former is decided, length and width measurements are vital. Be sure to write these down before your purchase. In order to ensure the best measurement, measure all around. Round to the smallest measurement when choosing window shades, because that will allow room for a shade to adjust easily.

Decide which shade to buy using the smallest width. This will also allow the shade to function easily as you raise and lower it. You will also need to measure the longest side of the window that you will be covering. Be sure to be accurate to make selecting the correct shade length easier. If you’re mounting this shade on the outside, figure out where you want the blind to begin and how far from the side of the window you wish for it to extend.

After measuring the window and making your blind purchase, install the window mounting brackets. These should have been included with your blind. The position you have chosen to mount your blind will determine where the brackets should be hung.

If you are mounting a roller shade inside, be sure that the blind will not bump into anything when it’s raised or lowered. Situate the shade’s mounting brackets inside the frame of the window before installing them. Align and level the brackets with each other. This should allow the blind to move easily.

You can also mount your shade from the ceiling, if you so choose. This is another form of outside mounting. Once again, make sure the shade won’t run into any obstacles when it is raised or lowered. Arrange the mounting brackets so they are in line and level on the ceiling. Leave 1/8″ of extra space between the brackets.

Another choice when hanging your roller shades is a ceiling mount, which is also an outside way of mounting. Make sure that the blind doesn’t hit the ceiling or anything else when it’s being used. Position the mounting brackets onto the ceiling, making sure they are aligned and level. If using this option, you will still want to leave 1/8 inch of extra space between the brackets.

For the spring roller shade, place this shade onto the brackets. Locate the circular hole and insert the round end pin into it. Finish off following the steps above, placing the end of this shade onto the slot on the other mounting bracket.

Now you will want to test your shade to make sure it’s functional and easy to operate. When working with spring roller shades, lower the shade 16″ from the top to tighten the spring. After this is done, remove it and roll it back up. Re-insert your roller into its brackets and check again to ensure tightness. Be careful to not apply too much tension on your shade. Overly stressing the roller could damage it. If you’re working with a loop shade, remove the cover and adjust the position of the chain stop.
