Roller Shades: Differences From Old-Fashioned Window Coverings

Privacy in the past was managed by covering your windows with vinyl shades that often looked dingy or yellowed. Roller shades could not be depended upon to stay in place. They were often hard to put precisely in one spot. Sometimes the only reason for choosing this type of window covering is that it was usually economical to purchase.

Today, roller shades are much more streamlined and offer a great alternative to shades, draperies or conventional shades. The designs are modern. They are effective tools for filtering light or blocking it completely. Even though they have been redesigned, the cost has remained very affordable. A wide variety of materials offer accents for your windows and are durable enough to withstand sunlight and its ultraviolet rays.

The window shades are designed with a thinner bar and a single layer of shade material fastened to the bar. This makes the mechanism much more discreet. It will blend into almost any room and decor without overwhelming the window. The window shades aren’t bulky any more. In fact, they come in many different fabrics and styles, so that you can roll them up and they almost disappear from sight.

The type of material used in making the window shades tells you how much light they will be able to block. Lightweight materials filter the UV rays of the sun. The heaver the fabric used in the window shades and the tighter the weave, the more natural light is blocked from the room. Filtered light eliminates the furniture and carpets from becoming faded and weak.

When the window shades are intended to completely darken the room, the material of which they are made might be much thicker. You will need to allow extra room to place the shade in the window frame. You will need a heaver shade or one that blocks light better to avoid shades that allow light and shadows to be seen clearly from outside. Protect your privacy by using a heavier shade or one with better opacity.

The window shades are opened and closed with either a continuous cord loop or a spring lift mechanism. You don’t have a dangling pull to get in the way or get worn out and lost. These types of shade controls are safer and easier to use than traditional pulls.

To raise and lower the shade, the new shades often use a beaded chain. A chain offers maximum control of the shades. They also are decorative without becoming a danger to pets or children playing near the windows. You can run a vacuum with out worrying about cords and chains.

Roller shades are beautiful and elegant. They add emphasis to your windows. At the same time, they are useful to filter or block light completely.
